Q: Why should I think about drug screening my employees?

A: Substance abuse in the workplace negatively affects U.S. industry through lost productivity, workplace accidents and injuries, employee absenteeism, low morale, and increased illness. The loss to U.S. companies due to employee’s alcohol and drug use and related problems is estimated to be in the billions of dollars each year.

Research shows that the rate of substance use varies by age, occupation and industry. A recent federal study indicates that 19% of workers between the ages of 18 and 25 are current (within the last 30 days) illicit drug users, compared with 10.3% of workers between 26 and 34, 7% of those between 35 and 49, and only 2.6% of workers between 50 and 64.

Certain industries have higher rates of substance abuse than others. For example, more than 18% of full-time workers between the ages of 16 and 64 in the ‘Food Services and Drinking Places’ industry admit to being current illicit drug users. This is followed by the ‘Performing Arts, Spectator and Related Industries’ at 15.5%, ‘General Merchandise Stores’ at 15.4%, ‘Landscape Services’ at 14.4%, and ‘Construction Industry’ at 13.7%.

Drug testing makes economic sense! Only 42.9% of full time employees reported that their employers conduct pre-employment testing. 29.6% reported random testing at their place of work. However, 46% of workers indicated they would be more likely to work for a company that conducts pre-employment drug testing. 29.1% of workers who admitted to being illicit drug users said they would be less likely to work for a company that conducts random testing.

It seems these figures would indicate that pre-employment testing will attract the kind of workers you want, while having a random testing program in place will ward off the kind of workers you want to avoid.
